This volume is not a contribution to theology. It consists of sermons, preached at various times, and under different circumstances, during the last fifteen years.

I have made no attempt to work these short discourses into a connected whole. They are printed as they were preached, with a few unimportant omissions and the removal of some of the faults of language, which it is to be feared are still too numerous. In a few instances, where for divers reasons it seemed desirable, I have inserted the date of composition.
