William Winter (1836-1917) was an American dramatic critic and author. Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard Law School in 1857. He then chose literature as his field of endeavor and moved to New York City in 1859, where he became literary critic of the Saturday Press. Then from 1861 until 1865 he was literary critic of the New York Albion and from 1865 until 1909 he was drama critic of the New York Tribune.
