In some of the old essays of the past and present centuries, are passages which allude to the play-house - that good old-fashioned word - the actors, and general entertainment of the stage, in a manner very significant, when we come to think of the present condition of our stage In the "Spectator," "Adventurer," and "Connoisseur," in the essays of Himt, Hazlitt, and Lamb, we find a certain sense of reverence, and even awe. They seem to approach the subject as if it were some fifth estate; it appeared something akin to Parliament, or the Law: the actors were potentates. Not. so many years ago Hazlitt ushered in his volume of criticisms, with a sort of apology, in which he appealed to the existing interest in the stage.
