Jessica has been invited to a New Year's Eve Ball in the Cotswolds in England, at an eldery earl's manor--a charming place least likely to host a murder. She calls upon her old-time friend, Scotland Yard Detective Investigator, George Sutherland to join her for the festivities. Sadly, the joys of the holiday are cut short when the earl is found dead, clutching a napkin to his mouth. It's hard to know where Jessica and George should begin as they untangle the web of gossip and tension between family members of the upstairs troupe and work colleagues of the downstairs group below. For one, the earl might have been a bit tight-fisted with his money, and it seems that his heir, his son, and his staff were vying for more of it. Plus, dislike among the characters could provide another motive for this dark midnight deed. As Jessica narrows down the list of suspects, she realizes that she must act quickly before the true villian gets away...
