The following section gives the pith of the writer's correspondence from the date of the publication of Jekyll and Hyde in January, 1886, down to that of his father's death in May, 1887. The period was one of trying ill-health and of meagre production, but at the same time of fast-growing literary reputation and popularity. Jekyll and Hyde, after threatening for the first week or two to fall flat, in no long time caught the attention of all classes of readers, was quoted from a hundred pulpits, and made the writer's name familiar to multitudes both in England and America whom it had never reached before. A success scarcely inferior, though of another kind, was made a few months afterwards by Kidnapped, which Stevenson finished in the spring, and which was published in the early summer.
