Edmond Eugene Alexis Rostand (1868-1918) was a French poet and dramatist associated with neo-romanticism. His romantic plays provided an alternative to the naturalistic theatre popular during the late 19th century. Rostand was born in Marseille, France, into a wealthy and cultured Provencal family. His father was an economist and a poet, a member of the Marseille Academy and the Institut de France. Rostand studied literature, history, and philosophy at the College Stanislas in Paris. One of Rostand"s works, Les Romanesques (1894), has been adapted as the highly successful musical comedy The Fantasticks. He is best known, however, for his play Cyrano de Bergerac (1897). An immediate triumph upon its release, the play is one of the most popular in the French language and has been filmed several times and even made into two operas and a ballet. He married the poet Rosemonde Gerard. In 1901, Rostand became the youngest writer to be elected to the Academie Francaise. His other works include: Le Gant Rouge (1888), Les Musardises (1890), La Princesse Lointaine (1895), La Samaritaine (1897), L"Aiglon (1900) and Chantecler (1910).
